One of the biggest talking points is the absence of Jofra Archer, who has not been included in the starting XI despite featuring in England’s recently concluded Test series against New Zealand. Fast bowler Josh Tongue, Sonny Baker, and Rehan Ahmed have also been left out of the squad for the series opener.
England have made two changes to the side that featured in the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final against India. Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood replace Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton, with Overton still recovering from the injury he sustained while representing Chennai Super Kings during IPL 2026.
The batting unit remains packed with firepower. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler are expected to provide an explosive start, while captain Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, and Tom Banton strengthen the middle order.
England have also opted for a strong all-round combination with Sam Curran, Will Jacks, and Liam Dawson, giving the visitors added depth in both batting and bowling.
Veteran spinner Adil Rashid will lead the spin attack, while the pace department will be handled by Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood, giving England a balanced bowling unit for the series opener.
With both teams aiming to begin the five-match series on a winning note, England will hope their revamped combination delivers against a confident Indian side.
