Football fans were left amazed when Beiranvand produced a series of brilliant saves against Belgium’s attacking line-up. His extraordinary reflexes, athleticism, flexibility and determination denied several clear scoring opportunities and showcased why he remains one of Iran’s most dependable goalkeepers.
During a high-profile international match, Belgium star Kevin De Bruyne witnessed Beiranvand’s exceptional goalkeeping firsthand. In one dramatic moment, Beiranvand slipped while attempting to stop a shot but still managed to recover and block the ball, preventing what looked like a certain goal.
Had football not entered his life, Beiranvand might have excelled as a gymnast. However, his journey to professional football was filled with struggles, sacrifices and countless obstacles.
Born into a nomadic shepherd family in Iran’s Lorestan province, Beiranvand spent much of his childhood moving from one place to another. His early years revolved around looking after sheep and ensuring none of the animals wandered away or were stolen.
In his spare time, he played football and a local game that involved throwing stones at distant targets. According to Beiranvand, the game helped develop the throwing power and accuracy that later became one of his greatest strengths as a goalkeeper.
His football dream began taking shape after his family settled permanently in a village. At the age of 12, he secretly joined a local football club despite his father’s objections. Initially, he played as a striker before unexpectedly taking over goalkeeping duties when the team’s regular goalkeeper was injured.
When his father discovered that he had abandoned shepherding duties to play football, he was furious and reportedly tore apart Beiranvand’s goalkeeper gloves. With no money to buy a new pair, the young footballer faced a difficult choice.
Determined to pursue his dream, Beiranvand secretly boarded a bus to Tehran, travelling nearly 600 kilometres with only a small amount of money borrowed from his brother.
Life in Tehran was anything but easy. He had no permanent place to stay and often slept in mosques or on the streets. On one occasion, he slept outside a football club. When he woke up, he found coins scattered around him after passers-by mistook him for a homeless beggar.
The money allowed him to buy a proper meal, but his struggles were far from over.
To survive, Beiranvand worked multiple jobs while continuing football training. He washed cars, worked in a pizza shop and even cleaned streets at night to earn enough money for daily expenses. The exhausting routine often left him with little time to rest, affecting both his health and football development.
Recognising his talent, coaches helped him secure financial support and opportunities to train with higher-level teams. Eventually, he earned a place in Iran’s Under-23 setup, providing him with stability and a pathway into professional football.
His breakthrough came in 2015 when he made his debut for the Iranian national team. Remarkably, it took just four years from arriving in Tehran with almost nothing to becoming an international footballer.
Beiranvand’s global reputation soared during the 2018 FIFA World Cup when he famously saved a penalty taken by Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest players in football history.
Years later, he returned home as a national hero. The father who once opposed his football ambitions eventually expressed pride in his son’s achievements, bringing an emotional end to one of football’s most inspiring journeys.
From tending sheep in rural Iran to standing tall on the world’s biggest football stages, Alireza Beiranvand’s story remains a powerful example of perseverance, sacrifice and determination.
