Court Rejects Special Request in Joseph Vijay–Sangeetha Divorce Case; Next Hearing Scheduled for August 7
Chengalpattu court orders personal appearance of both parties, refuses plea for virtual attendance amid ongoing divorce proceedings
The divorce proceedings between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam have taken a fresh turn after a recent court hearing. The Chengalpattu Women’s Court has now scheduled the next hearing in the case for August 7, while rejecting a special request made by the couple’s legal representatives.

According to reports, the hearing took place on June 15, with both Vijay and Sangeetha appearing before the court as directed. However, no major breakthrough or settlement was reached during the proceedings.
Sangeetha has filed for divorce, seeking an official end to their 27-year marriage. In her petition filed under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, she has alleged that Vijay maintained an extramarital relationship and caused her mental distress. While the petition reportedly does not mention any actress by name, speculation linking Vijay with actress Trisha Krishnan has intensified since the divorce case became public.
Court Rejects Online Appearance Request
The first hearing in the matter was scheduled for April 20. However, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared in person on that date, and their lawyers represented them before the court. Subsequently, the court directed both parties to remain personally present for the June 15 hearing.
Considering the public profile of the couple and citing security concerns, their legal teams had requested permission for virtual attendance. The court, however, rejected the plea and made it clear that both parties were required to appear physically before the court.
Details Mentioned in the Petition
Sangeetha has alleged that despite assuring her that he would end the alleged relationship, Vijay continued travelling and attending events with the woman concerned. She further claimed that photographs shared on social media caused embarrassment and emotional distress to her and their children.
The petition also states that emotional distance gradually developed between the couple. Sangeetha has accused Vijay of neglecting the relationship, imposing restrictions on her lifestyle and finances, and creating a stressful domestic environment. According to her, repeated attempts to reconcile through legal notices and personal discussions between August 2024 and February 2025 failed to resolve their differences.
A Marriage That Lasted Nearly Three Decades
Vijay and Sangeetha first met in the 1990s and married in 1999. They have two children — son Jason Sanjay and daughter Divya. Their son is currently making headlines for his directorial debut project, “Sigma.”
With the court fixing August 7 as the next hearing date, all eyes will now be on the developments in one of the most talked-about celebrity divorce cases in South India.
